The Seattle Police Department, directly involved in an Internet "flame war" in the Usenet newsgroup Rec.Skiing.Alpine that led to the first-ever local court gag order banning a man from posting to a global Internet public newsgroup, is providing confidential information to a faction that is working to keep the Usenet flame war going almost a year after the gag order was issued.
The faction, which calls itself "Team Satan," classifies itself as a "transgendered" e-mail group on the group e-mail list service Egroups (http://www.egroups.com/), has the announced purpose: " gather and discuss the opressive [sic], life sucking entity known as "ScottBert". The references are to Scott Abraham, the man against whom the gag order was issued, and his friend Bert Hoff. The group was formed in August 1999, and was instrumental in obtaining the gag-order. It is spearheaded by an Australian woman, Anthea Kerrison, who developed a relationship with David Hobbs, one of the petitioners for the gag order, during a ski trip to the Whistler/Blackcomb ski resort in British Columbia in March of that year.
The Seattle Police Department, acting through Det. Leanne Shirey, has been working closely with this transgendered e-mail group since its inception, urging participants David Hobbs and Edward "Ted" Waldron of Seattle to file for the gag order petition and introducing into evidence at the gag-order proceeding e-mails from Ms. Kerrison and other participants of the transsexual "Team Satan" e-mail group.
Det. Shirey has been closely collaborating with the transgendered e-mail list group since the proceeding, passing to this group information from private police department incident reports for their use in posts continuing the "flame war" in rec.skiing.alpine.One of the faction's strategies is to have participants post to rec.skiing.alpine anonymously with insulting, derogatory and private information about their targets. One participant recently posted anonymously under the moniker "TinaTwo" a message to the Usenet groups seattle.general and rec.skiing.alpine: Oh, Mr. Abraham. You just told a LIE. So, you think that lying publicly will some how erase the memory of how not so long ago, the POLICE were called to remove you from a Seattle AA meeting? And you were directed not to attend that chapter ever again?
Another anonymous participant, "zorak 250," also made this claim earlier. This information, if true, could only come from Seattle Police Department police incident reports.
During the earlier gag-order proceedings Det. Shirey testified that respondent Abraham skis with a gun, a claim which Abraham adamantly denies. This apparently-false information was provided by Ms. Kerrison of the transgendered e-mail list group. Det. Leanne Shirey also perjured herself, testifying under oath that she had not received any complaints that petitioner Hobbs had made death threats or threats of physical violence against Bert Hoff or his family. Bert Hoff had filed a complaint with Det. Shirey about these threats to himself, his wife and his family a month and amonthbefore proceedings. During a break, Det. Shirey admitted that she had received this complaint against petitioner Hobbs and discussed it with her captain, then made the decision to ignore the complaint. She later testified that Mr. Hoff's e-mail complaint had "threatened" her and "made demands" on the Seattle Police Department. Since the gag-order was issued, Mr. Hoff has continued to be threatened, stalked in Seattle, and harassed, and his wife has been subjected to threatening and harassing phone calls.
In early September 2000, shortly after their role on Rec.Skiing.Alpine was the subject of hot discussion in that newsgroup, the transgendered e-mail list group withdrew from the Egroup service. Here is the group's description, as listed on E-Groups: Teamsatan
